    • (486854) - Family business

    Total Number of Comments10
    • (495291) - I've been the token EOE female, especially when I was an apprentice.
    • (489176) - sex no, physical abilities or limitations yes
    • (489134) - Some men dont think your are strong physically
    • (488423) - No
    • (488069) - Only perceived differences.
    • (486854) - Do you mean gender? If so, I think I answered most of those in questions 10-15.
    • (486836) - I think that women are more organized and detail oriented, also more able to multi-task - all of which are beneficial in this industry.
    • (486831) - Easier to be a woman when training
    • (486295) - Some advantages - affirmative action.
    • (486221) - Both. As a female, you have to contantly prove that you are not an idiot when you first meet people on the design/construction team. Typically, in my case, I come off as kurt. At the same time, I use my ability to communicate and feminine nature to get things done. Point being: Women need to be thick-skinned, assertive, and feminine all at the same time
    20. Are there any difficulties (discrimination, negative attitudes) which you have encountered while working in this industry? (Required)
    Total Number of Comments10
    • (495291) - Very minor.
    • (489176) - Discrimination in it self is a negative and misleading word.
    • (489134) - Yes from competitors that dont beleive women are strong or smart enough to run a facility.
    • (488423) - A little but not near as much as I thought.
    • (488069) - Yes, At times it has been difficult with older men's long term attitudes regarding gender in construction. It takes a long time to earn their respect for my abilities.
    • (486854) - I answered that in #8 and 9 above, no additional information to share.
    • (486836) - I've had to prove myself many times - most likely much more than a man in the same position.
    • (486831) - Yes
    • (486295) - No - only while in school
    • (486221) - A general contractor was very rude to me throughout the construction phase of a project. He would not listen to my comments, which he was required to as I was the engineer on the job. He cursed me out, where I immediately left and told my immediate supervisor and the client that I would not be going to the job site anymore. A male colleague of mine from a different trade (less experienced than myself) went to the site hours earlier. The contractor told him that women don't know anything and that if I showed up, he would throw me out of the window. I brought up this issue with the owner of the contractor business. The person in question was fired the next day.
