  • (515205) - Kind of fell into it by leaving the electronic assembly lines to go into office work. A Mechanical Subcontractor gave me a chance to work for them with no experience on the job training. Enjoyed working with the crew and learning all aspects of the business and it was a right fit for me.
  • (505881) - being an Ironworker has been in my family for over 3 generations.. It is an honnor for me to be an Ironworker .. I have great pride in what I do ( sorry for the bad english I'm french )
  • (501780) - I love to build and to be outside. I am a great problem solver. I was drawn to the industry since I was a child, and it never occured to me that as a woman I would not be able to succeed in this business.
  • (498373) - Since i was a child i've been submerged in the construction industry, my summer vacations were spent at my father's construction sites while the workers were laying out the CMU and mortar. It's in the blood.
  • (495291) - Working outside, working with tools, building things, good money
  • (493955) - I like to tinker and my husband is a remodeling contractor who always asked or sought out my ideas, so we have worked well ( mostly) for over 20 years
  • (492607) - $
  • (492551) - I had been interested in learning a trade for a while, so that I could obtain a skill that is marketable. I wanted to get into a union building trade so that I could have the opportunity to work with my hands and brain, to earn fair wage doing an fulfilling, honest days work.
  • (489357) - I am interested in the bulding process, design and learning how to manage that. I was in Marketing and though I learned a lot I wish there would have been more opportunity for training, because I'd have soaked it up! Being a woman in construction is a catch 22
  • (489176) - I like working with my hands and mind. I also working were in must know the goings on around me due t the danger, and i like going home knowing what i did mattered. And "no" on question 17 and only answered 18 because it is required nothing more.
  • (489134) - Just fell into it..but love the fast paced action & the people I work with. Its a great environment.

19. Are there sex advantages or disadvantages during employment? (Required)
Total Number of Comments60
  • (505881) - If a female can't work as hard as a male she doesn't have a place with Ironworkers, but Ive seen girls twice as strong as some guys on the job, so as long as you can do the job female or male, it all good!
  • (501780) - One perk of being a woman in construction is that you can use your feminity to your advantage at times.
  • (498373) - Some, you gotta work like everyone one else and sometimes even more to just prove that are you as equally capable as any older generation man.
  • (495291) - I've been the token EOE female, especially when I was an apprentice.
  • (493955) - depends on the job but yes, if we went for federal jobs, me as a female owner has an advantage over a male owner if bids are similar. Disadvantage is people seeing females as incapable of some aspects of the construction process which can be valid so sub-contractors often can alleviate that grievance.
  • (492607) - fuck no they just hired me and put me to work
  • (492551) - Through my experience as an Ironworker, I have noticed that women seem to have a better opportunity to stay working steadily with a contractor. I do see many more men working steady like this, and have also talking to a few women who havent been laid off in years. Women and men alike are yelled at and joking around with everyday within my trade.
  • (489357) - Its a catch 22. As a woman you are looked upon as if you have very little working kowledge so you have to work harder t gain the respect. Men automatically look at you as the eye candy and often use their power to control whether you get work or not. So, even if you have the knoweldge you have road blocks put in your way. Some men do not do this and those are the men I am glad to know in the industry.
  • (489176) - sex no, physical abilities or limitations yes
  • (489134) - Some men dont think your are strong physically
  • (489094) - I started as an apprentice in the electrical apprenticeship (IBEW Local 595 in California) 22 yrs ago and yes it was tough. I was a straight young blonde aerobics instructor and I struggled with the attention at first. I was frustrated because I just wanted to be an employee. I received some wonderful advice from an older gentleman that helped me move foward.
20. Are there any difficulties (discrimination, negative attitudes) which you have encountered while working in this industry? (Required)
Total Number of Comments62
  • (515205) - Have dealt with some pretty strong attitudes yes but also some really great people. I would say the most difficulty is working with the more seasoned contruction vetrans who refuse to learn how to operate computers or equipment needed to run a project.
  • (505881) - for shure!! its the construction industrie were talking about you have to be able to take some and let some go!!
  • (501780) - I have faced discrimination when I became pregnant and wanted to work reduced hours (40 hours per week versus the normal 50+) after my baby was born.
  • (498373) - Cultural/Religious discrimination.
  • (495291) - Very minor.
  • (493955) - vendors and marketing reps often will ask for the owner thinking it is not me, but that can take place in any field.
  • (492607) - sure everyones there own individual, truth is now a days the industry's a professonal enviroment and that isn't tolorated
  • (492551) - not that i've noticed
  • (489357) - Yes. I have been told that if I would have a sexual relationship with someone then they would give my company business. No thanks. Then there is the pressure from my boss telling me to bring the business in. I wonder at whether these people respect boundaries within a professional working relationship.
  • (489176) - Discrimination in it self is a negative and misleading word.
  • (489134) - Yes from competitors that dont beleive women are strong or smart enough to run a facility.
