2. Do you have any feedback that would help us improve weekly visits with the veterans?

  • (533636) - I was wondering whether the veterans that are assigned to us actually have expressed wanting visitors? Because I had the feeling that my veterans this quarter were uninterested in having me visit.
  • (533318) - Maybe some guidance for using the provided materials (art supplies, games, etc) or a list of the veterans who enjoy these things...
  • (533263) - The biggest problem I had personally was that one of my veterans was always asleep. I really wished that he had been informed or notified beforehand because I only got to see him the last half of the quarter and I wish I could have seen him more.
3. How would you rate the logistics of your weekly visits (reliability of carpools, flexibility in scheduling, communications between USVH staff, VA staff, etc).? (Required)

4. Do you have any feedback that would help us improve the logistics of weekly visits?

  • (533636) - 1) The first week, my driver and I must have missed the memo that we were a week too early? 2) My driver would often cancel at the last minute and there wasn't a time I could make it up :( 3) We would wait a long time for our other volunteers and they never came. It turned out that they dropped out but never let us know.
  • (533422) - send more reminders to drivers and emphasize their responsibility
  • (533318) - The drivers need to be held more accountable for getting their carpools to the VA consistently every week.
  • (533280) - I didn't get an email telling me where to sign in and find my badge once the building switched. More communication could have helped.
  • (533263) - Everything was great. The availability of carpools was awesome and the amount of volunteer shifts were also great.
  • (533252) - When I arrive on Sunday morning, B wing is typically locked, and it is difficult to find someone to let me in.

  • (484781) - My carpool and the staff at the hospital were excellent, but I found that communication within the overall USVH group was very poor. It was often unclear what the group's expectations were.
  • (484780) - It is really important that the carpool drivers can and WILL drive EVERY week to the veterans home. It is really a bummer when the carpool driver emails last minute saying "I have too much work"...
  • (484741) - I get frustrated when my driver cancels because there's no other time slot that I can go, so I feel bad not showing up without warning my veterans ahead of time. I don't think anything can be done about that, though.
  • (484730) - Sometimes carpool drivers can't drive and don't let you know until too late, then it's hard to arrange anything else. There was also no system set up to let us find other means of transportation

  • (533263) - Possibly have it sent out and processed sooner so that the volunteering process can be started earlier in the quarter.

8. What did you like about the special event(s) that you attended? Do you have other ideas for special events or programming at the VA or on campus?

  • (533636) - I liked that the veterans seemed to enjoy it.
  • (533318) - These were fun to meet and connect with other volunteers, but higher attendance to these would be even more fun...I know thats tough though.
  • (533263) - I only got to attend the Veteran's Barbeque during the quarter, but from what I have heard from the veterans, they really enjoyed Art in the Park and basically, going outside to enjoy some fresh air. Ideas would include something of that nature - just have the veterans be a bit more active and enjoying the outdoors.
  • (484780) - Both were fun! I plan to attend some of the events at the VA this next quarter.

10. Do you have any feedback that would help us improve the orientation and application processes?

  • (533263) - The application and orientation process was a bit slow. If it could have been done earlier in the quarter or even before the start of the quarter, that would given me more time to volunteer at the VA.
  • (484730) - The application was good. The orientation was kind of a waste of time. we just went over a packet and had to spend a long time fingerprinting. The tour was also not helpful, because we had never been there before and didn't know where we would be volunteering.

12. Do you have any other feedback that may help us to improve the volunteer experience or the USVH program in general?

  • (533669) - We really should have gotten started sooner.
  • (533636) - I just had a really hard time with it this quarter. Other quarters have been much better, so I think it may have just been unlucky circumstances.
  • (533263) - I truly loved volunteering at the VA. Although I was intimidated at first because of all the veterans and their tough appearance, after a few visits, I got to know them a bit more and enjoyed every minute just talking and sitting with them.
  • (484780) - I really got to know one of my veterans, which was awesome. I think that thoughtful pairing of volunteers with veterans would be especially great.
  • (484730) - I have really enjoyed the program and I'm glad I joined this quarter. I'm sad I'm going abroad next quarter, but I definitely want to continue over the summer and next year!
