485511. Neverending work to be done
487323. Balancing everything: homework, sleep, practice, stress, health, maybe having a job, and still being social.
25. Does the fact that you are female have any factor in making your learning process as music students more difficult?
Total Number of Comments10
  • (493960) - not in any way shape of form.
  • (487323) - This may be more information than asked for but I feel that we as females not only have to deal with all the regular stresses of male students (practice, stress, sleep, health, homework, perhaps even a job -- or 2, making time socially -- and the drama that may come with social time), but we also mensturate and that has a HUGE effect on our energy (especially), our voice, and our mentality. There are methods one can take to alleviate and deal with some of the symptoms of PMS or PMDD, but the symptoms are still there. So the difficulty of being a music student is increased. However, I, personally, feel that because I love music so much, all the "bad" stuff, really isn't that bad. :)
  • (485543) - The demands of the coursework, lessons and general practicing do not bend for female issues: emotional, physical (menstrual for example), or psychological. I'm not sure that this would be different in another field but due to the sheer amount of TIME we are engaged with the music school I believe the stress and lack of flexibility is heightened.
  • (485511) - No, although sometimes I do feel discriminated against by male faculty members.
  • (485411) - I do not think so
  • (485370) - I don't think so.
  • (485048) - not at all
  • (483856) - Being an undergrad, and a soprano at IU is a very difficult combination. College is supposed to prepare you for life. In my opinion, the only way to learn is through experience, and the only way to gain experience at IU is by being a grad student. So yes, I would say that being female makes my learning process more difficult.
  • (483258) - No. Probably less so as generally we are not placed in so many ensembles.
  • (483166) - I don't think so. Besides creepy male music majors (not unlike Matt Cooksey) creeping on me. BAHAHAHAHAH. Good luck good luck with your paper!
